The Impact of Environment on Productivity, Flow
Although the title may suggest this is going to be a post about choosing, arranging or otherwise achieving the ideal environment for maximum productivity, that is not the case. Instead I want to discuss quite the opposite: that environment has little or nothing to do with being productive. It doesn't make or break the ability to settle into a good Flow, and it doesn't matter the amount of comfort you derive from it.
Take my example: I have some development to do, and for some parts of the process I prefer using Mac, and for others I prefer my desktop PC. It's not for any legitimate reason, such as a program is only available on one system; my preference is more intangible. More of an environmental preference. I prefer the big desktop screen while coding, and the gamut of graphics tools on my Macbook Pro while designing.
But I can live without 99% of these niceties.
As such, environment is irrelevant. Although a task might take me 26 minutes on my laptop instead of 24 on the PC, that is far and away faster than not doing the task at all when I'm stuck away from home with a spare 30 minutes of idleness.
